I'm a bad mom.
With a title like that this could be a very long post indeed if I were to list all the mistakes I've made in the 9 short years I've carried that title. But I won't do that to you, or myself. No, I've realized that there is no possible way to be perfect parent. . .that's why you have more then one ;) And I've realized that even tho you make a lot of mistakes with the first one, I mean learn a lot, life gets too busy and tiring to do a good job with subsequent children.
Let me back track a bit for you. Three years ago I took son (now 6) to see the Dr after months of putting it off because he couldn't speak. Well, he could, the problem was no one could understand him. Turned out he had so much fluid, due to allergies, in his ears it was like trying to understand the world from under water. A little allergy medication and a few months of speech therapy and he was caught up. During those months we moved to a house that wasn't filled with mold and I decided he no longer needed the meds. All went well for years.
A few months ago I started to notice him "not hearing" again. It's easy to blow off a 5 yo that "doesn't hear you" as normal. . .don't most 5 yo's ignore their parents calls from time to time? But I knew. He was also asking "what'd you say?" more and more. I knew.
But I'm busy, and frankly his older sister wore me out by the time he was born. Taking her to the Dr or dentist office is like wrestling a pig in mud. Or arguing with a litigation lawyer. Or actually like if you wrestled in mud a talking pig lawyer that hates mud. Trying to get her to go anywhere is a chore that wares me out mentally, physically, and emotionally. On top of that I've been dealing with my medical problems.
I think it's time to get him checked and back on allergy meds and stop being a bad mom.

Cream of Potato and Broccoli Soup
Review of:
Cream of Potato and Broccoli Soup by Vegan Dad
MMMMMMMMM! If you are looking for some cold weather comfort food, this is it. Easy to make, creamy goodness. This is the kind of soup you need a good crusty bread with so that you can sop up the last bit you can't get with a spoon. You can't even tell it's soy not cow cream.

public school, skating, and Risotto
Ok I've got a few random, unrelated things to say.
First. Em passed her ice skating test yesterday and is now level 3. So proud of her.
Next. Review of Vegan Dad's Broccoli Risotto:
This was great! A little on the bland side, but that is super easy to fix. Everyone here liked it. For the little guy and I sauteed some tofu to mix in, and the meat eaters got grilled chicken breast.
This dish actually reminds me of the chicken, broc. cheese casserole I used to make.
Last. OMGood gravy! Today I found out that in the state we live in homeschooling families can enroll their kids in non core classes at the public school. As in, I could send my kids to the neighborhood grade school to take art, and gym. In fifth grade they can join band, 6th take a foreign language. Join the football team. etc. This is great news. Now what to do with this new found information. I mean other then pass it on to my local homeschool friends.

Soy-free Vegan Mac and Cheese
Mac and "cheese"
Mixed reviews, again. I loved it. The kids however will pass. I'm starting to wonder if the problem is not the food but the fact that it's not what they are used to. These are the same kids that would only eat one brand of regular mac and cheese. I put a dab of the sauce on my sons bean quesadilla. He didn't notice so I guess it's not worth making it for that. Not sure I will make this again with some changes, I wouldn't know where to start. I do think I'm going to avoid "cheese" dishes for awhile tho.
And.
This is the last time I try a recipe from the Happy Herbivore, well for awhile. No offense to to her, I m sure she's a lovely woman, and this isn't even a remark against her cooking. Different people have different tastes. And it should be known that when I first began cooking I spent a long time tweaking recipes to make them my own. I don't think there is more then a handful of recipes I use that I haven't changed from the original. So now that I'm cooking vegan dishes it shouldn't be surprising I will need to do the same. I've just not had good luck with the few dishes I've tried from her site so far. I'm going to move on for awhile before I come back.
